Padmanaban utilises functional metabolic studies to understand obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus and their pathogenesis in the Indian population. He is currently using the tools of statistical genetics and genomics to elucidate the genetic architecture of body fat distribution and metabolic disorders in the Indian population.
