Research

The Department of Biochemistry at the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, India, is an academic basic science department, engaged in teaching, training and research. Research work in the department was initiated in the 1960s by Professor Mary Dumm who, in collaboration with the Wellcome Research Unit at CMC, Vellore, worked on vitamin A and protein supplementation for children. The Department of Biochemistry was the driving force behind CMC successfully applying for a grant from the organization, American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA, USAID) in 2003, towards the establishment of a basic science laboratory (BSL) on the campus of the medical college. The laboratory was inaugurated in 2007. The department, thus, has a well-equipped and modern laboratory, with facilities to carry out work in cellular biochemistry and molecular biology. Equipment obtained on other grants, previously and subsequently, have added to the facilities available in the BSL.

Research work done in the department is funded by both intramural and extramural grants. Intramural grants provide funding for dissertations done by MD trainees and seed money for initiation of work. Extramural grants are the mainstay of funds for research.
